Mort Morss

Mort Morss

Mort Morss began hybridizing daylilies at Ed & David Kirchhoff’s DaylilyWorld in 1972 in Sanford, Florida. His initial goals were to breed appliqué throat patterns, fancy edges, and patterned eyes. Morss was one of the first hybridizers to get excited over toothy edges and to see their potential. H. ‘Shark’s Tooth’ (1985) was his earliest toothy introduction. H. ‘Fortune’s Dearest’ (Morss) 1994 and H. ‘God Save The Queen’ (Morss 2005) are two of his best known and most popular toothy hybrids.

His cultivars win an impressive array of awards. There are many Honorable Mention and Award Of Merit awards to his credit.  His award-winning first introduction, H. ‘Inner View’ (Morss, 1982), received rave reviews for its appliqué throat pattern. The 1997 Lennington All American Award-winning H. ‘Paper Butterfly’ (Morss, 1983) was one of the first widely acclaimed cultivars with a patterned eyezone. H. ‘Paper Butterfly’ won the Don C. Stevens Award in 1987, and H. ‘Always Afternoon’ (Morss, 1987) won the Stevens award in 1993.

His unwavering pursuit of excellence in the realm of patterned daylilies results in three RW Munson, Jr. awards for patterned daylilies: H. ‘Witch Stitchery’ (Morss, 1986) won the award in 2001, as did H. ‘Gerda Brooker’ (Morss, 1995) in 2005 and H. ‘Julie Newmar’ (Morss, 2000) in 2006. H. ‘Julie Newmar’ won the Extra Large Diameter Award in 2008. H. ‘Always Afternoon’won the Stout Silver Medal in 1997. H. ‘Barbara Dittmer’ (Morss, 1994) won the Annie T Giles Award (small flower) in 2003 and the Early Season Bloom Award in 2005.

In 2000, the AHS honored Mort Morss with the Bertrand Farr Silver Medal, a distinguished honor reserved for members who have attained outstanding results in the field of hybridizing. Morss and Kirchhoff moved the Daylily World Garden to a hilltop in Kentucky in 2006. They are fast re-establishing their lines as reliable and consistently hardy daylilies for northern gardens.
